Synopsis:

“What did you just say? The senior officer (Special Agent Thompson) of the two men from Homeland Security, that both Nancy and Kim knew prior, repeated, ‘Rob and Liza Caldwell were taken out as a hit’ in Boston last night and we think their assassin is the agent handler extraordinairewho put out the hit job on the President, and on you, Kim, last November. The hit man’s name is Jeffrey Sanders, we don’t know any alias, ethnicity, or if male or female. Security cameras were disabled before the actual hit. Rob and Liza were asleep when it happened early this morning. A silencer was used, and neighbors heard their dog barking non-stop and became worried. The couple checked on them, found them dead in their bed, and called 911. The police detectives could tell it was a professional hit and called us. Special Agent Hughes and I flew directly here from Washington, DC. A note left at the scene read, ‘Two down, eleven to go’ and the eleven to go are most likely both of you, the President, and people unidentified. Make no mistake. The hit man will take out anyone with you, when, NOT if, they find you.”

Mary L Schmidt has woven a tale intertwined with romance, a wedding, a newborn baby, and a crazy assassin who attempts to kill the husband of the protagonist, Kim, the owner of an Art gallery.
Four persons were assassinated and a note was left behind stating, “Four down, and ten to go?”
Ten persons were given police protection for a few days. The assassin died while in police custody, and a mysterious person appeared in Evergreen disguised as a Russian oligarch. Police suspect that the assassin was looking for a computer chip when Kim’s art gallery was broken into, but we have to wait for the third episode of the series to find out who is behind it all, and why Kim and her husband of five months, are targeted. This book will keep you reading to the end to find out what’s next.

Romance in Evergreen is the second installment of Mary L. Schmidt’s Heart of Evergreen series. After escaping the clutches of their former husbands, Kim and Nancy have started their lives anew in Evergreen, Colorado. But the past rears its ugly head again when they receive news of the deaths of Rob and Liza at the hands of an assassin in Boston. While Kim closes down her art gallery in Evergreen, everyone she loves or cares about is now under the protection of Homeland Security. Her husband, Dr. Paul Smith, has been hit by a truck and is in recovery at the hospital when another attempt is made on his life. Now, someone wants to get their hands on the frames of the paintings at Kim’s gallery. Will the assassin be caught? Will Kim and her loved ones find peace?

As far as sequels go, Romance in Evergreen is a brilliant follow-up to Christmas in Evergreen. Suspense, mystery, and romance color the pages of Mary L. Schmidt’s captivating tale, which is devoid of any dull moments. Using a fast-paced plot full of surprises, Schmidt crafts a narrative that never lets your attention waver and is entertaining from beginning to end. One of the primary highlights of the book is the relationship dynamics between the characters. Both the couples, Kim and Paul, as well as Nancy and Richard, display genuine feelings and emotions that make them feel like real people. I also enjoyed the characterization of Director James Tilson. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to finish the trilogy. Recommended to lovers of romance and thrillers.

Romance in Evergreen is the second book in Mary L. Schmidt’s Heart of Evergreen series. The focus of this story is on Nancy and Richard, who are preparing for their wedding. A crazed assassin has set his sights on Sarah, her family, and friends including Kim and Nancy, for some perceived offense that seems to do with Sarah’s past. A Russian spy is working undercover in close quarters trying to get his hands on intel that is unknowingly in Sarah’s possession. Against the backdrop of suspense, romance blooms in the group. Will they figure out who the real danger is before they become his target?

The storyline for Romance in Evergreen continues from book 1 (Her Heart) so readers who are not aware of Sarah and her background story might not fully understand the emotional response of the characters in the first chapter. However, Mary L Schmidt straightforwardly narrates the story, with vivid descriptions of settings, character thoughts, and emotions, and as a reader new to the series, I was soon engrossed in the plot. Even while the suspense part of the story progresses, the dynamic of the relationship between the main characters Nancy and Richard also develops. The focus is not just on one relationship but also on the relationships between Sarah and Aaron, Kim and Paul, and the blossoming relationship between James and Alice. The author ensures that this story has a resolution while leaving readers with a clear idea of who the next story in the series will focus on.

Romance in Evergreen: Heart of Evergreen by Mary L. Schmidt is the second book in the series. Two friends of Kim and Nancy were killed in Boston by an assassin, and his next targets were Kim, Nancy, and others close to them. Homeland Security took immediate action to ensure the group’s safety and arranged for them to be transported to a secure location. The assassin passed away while in police custody, but when Kim’s art gallery was broken into, the police believed that someone was searching the paintings for something. Dmitry Ivanov, disguised as a Russian oligarch, gave Kim his business card, introduced himself, and said he was an art collector. After reviewing all the information about the assassination, Homeland Security Director Tilson felt that he was still lacking a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Romance in Evergreen: Heart of Evergreen by Mary L. Schmidt was a page-turner. It was fast-paced and jam-packed with action, and I was hooked from the start. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what would happen next and was guessing until the end. It was an easy read, and the chapters flowed into each other. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and it was difficult to put the book down. The characters were authentic and relatable, and my favorite was Kim. She felt responsible for all the deaths around her and would go out of her way to keep everyone close to her safe. The story was beautifully written, and I enjoyed reading it. It was much more than I expected and exceeded my expectations by far.
