On Return

A man does not always return to the place he remembers. Sometimes, he returns to find there is no place left for him.

The cottage felt smaller than he remembered.

The scent of fresh bread filled the air—warm, familiar, yet somehow distant. Robert sat, listening to quiet footsteps and the voices of children who’d grown while he was gone.

The door creaked open, the quiet broken by footsteps.

“Robert?”

His father crossed the room in two strides and embraced him.

“Daa…”

For a moment, nothing else existed.

Then Robert turned and gestured behind him.

“I’ve brought summat fer ya.”

The wool lay piled beside the spinning wheel.

Isabel smiled. “He’s a trader, William. Brought it all this way fer us.”

The smile left William’s face.

An uneasy quiet grew, thick with unspoken words.

“Trader?” William repeated, turning to Robert.

Robert stepped forward. “There’s no shame in it. I buy where others can’t sell—”

“TRADERS ARE THE ARSEWORMS OF THE MOORS!”

The words struck harder than any blow.

William pressed his hand into the wool, jaw set with more than anger.

“If this comes from dishonour…”

He did not finish the sentence.

He didn’t need to.

And in that moment, Robert understood—

He had not come home as the same man who had left.
