I’m re-working on making our “Shadow and Friends” series book covers so that they represent the book numbers in the series as well as a change from the basic text I use all the time. So… the bottom one is my original cover and the upper one is my new design layout. No banners or ribbons.

Pro tip is to make copies of book covers – reduce them down to 500 pixels high, 300 pixels high and Thumbnail sizes (100 or 150 pixels high) to see what they look like on Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, etc.
Can you read the Title, Author names, etc, easily?

Thanks Chris. I am dumping this one altogether.

It is much easier to read… Stands out. I like the top part a lot… Could even opaque it a bit.. The bottom banner I do like but I would like more of the background coming through because it is so beautiful. I like you are tieing it all together. I glad you kept the horse as focal point…

I can’t give professional advice, but the authors’ names stand out in the original. The Raymond is kind of lost in the shading of the banner on the new cover. The tree range and sky at the top are covered up on the new cover. Although this won’t matter to people who have never seen the original.

Thank you Linda. I’m changing to no ribbon and using two texts on the top with no design to cover up the cover art.

It’s just that the art is too beautiful to cover up. If I’d never seen it, I wouldn’t miss it.

Understood. I think someone on social media tried to teach me the way they like things and not my way.

I like the new cover much better! It’s far more sticking!

It’s definitely an improvement. The color choices are eye catching and nice. The first thing I would say is to try different font choices. Google “free fonts for commercial use” to get a caskload. They are very easy to install. You also might want to play with a slightly narrower border for the title shape. The last thing I would look at is to see if the text can be curved to match the ribbon, and if not, then perhaps make the ribbon horizontal so the design pulls together. I echo the advice to see it at all sizes. A quick way to do that is just open it up in picture viewer and play with zooming it in and out. I actually have an entry on my blog all about “thumbnail appeal” if you want to search that.
Best of luck with your cover, you’re definitely moving in the right direction!

The new one is lovely, but the text could be clearer. At thumbnail size, it might be hard to read.

The new cover is easier to read, but the font could be made to stand out against the background more. You don’t have to change the color of the font, just use some graphic effects to make it stand out.
