Forevermore (Red Roses Book 3)

From Amazon:

“Forevermore,” the third volume in King’s Red Roses Series, offers poetry expressing the true and profound love shared between the two that started in volume one, “Twelve Red Roses in Verse,” and beautifully develops further in volume two, “More Red Roses In Verse.” Now, in “Forevermore,” that relationship blooms fully and, as the book’s title suggests, reveals the forever-lasting, entwined love between these lovers. This collection warms the heart, satisfies the soul, and reminds each of us that the possibility of true love is real. This book is a treasure trove of eternal love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moved beyond measure

This particular book of poetry by King moved me beyond measure. The words speak of a true love so rare and perfect moments in time while walking, viewing the night sky, sketching nearby each other, the twinkle of stars, the curve of lips, the yearning to be together as one, not an ocean apart. King is deeply in love with Julie, and the poetry from his soul speaks deeply. That love is returned by Julie to him, but this book focuses on his feelings for Julie and what he sees in a simple raindrop or the waves lapping the shoreline. Thank you for sharing how you feel with me. You are truly a forevermore man and woman.

Whatever It Takes

From Amazon:

WHATEVER IT TAKES

THE WIFE: Lorna lives with her husband in her dream home, loves socialising and has a passion for the finer things in life.

THE HUSBAND: Dan owns a successful accountancy business, enjoys golf and exercise, and loves Lorna deeply.

Life is good. Until new neighbours move in to the house next door.

Perry, a property developer is charismatic and friendly, with a beautiful young wife, Ingrid. They become friends, sharing intimate dinners, trips away and ultimately a holiday together in Greece. But all is not as friendly as it seems.

While there, a fatal accident occurs that changes their lives.

They don’t all return. But those that do, are hiding a huge secret . . . and there’s someone who will do whatever it takes to make sure that it never comes to the surface.

My Review:

What a woven tale of true love, twisted love, fake love, hate, intentional and extensive planning of two murders, and much more. Why a woman would allow herself to be wrapped up in promises of a rich life and child free, when she had a kind and generous man, despite watching dollars (an accountant after all), and she did have control of her own earned money, let planning evil for months, if not a year or more, is beyond me. That gives this book five stars. There are areas of repetition that aren’t needed and should be cut from the galley.

Soulmates Forevermore: Love Poetry For Eternal Lovers

Book Link

From Amazon:

Discover the heartfelt journey of eternal love in “Soulmates Forevermore”, a collection of poetry that honors the joy and devotion of soulmates. With verses that touch on love’s warmth, healing presence, and divine connection, Derek R King brings each moment shared between two destined souls to life. From the first meeting to promises of forever, these poems capture the depth of affection, contentment, and peace that only true love brings. Ideal for those who believe in love’s lasting power, “Soulmates Forevermore” is a celebration of soulmates finding their place in each other’s lives, forevermore.

My Review:

I loved this book. From the start, it was deeply moving and filled with love that everyone should feel. Each line conveyed using natural elements from skin to moonlight, softness to yearning, yet yearning not so much as two became one in each poem so they were always together. Derek and Julie have the relationship most people can’t even imagine.

Autumn 1624

Europe is deeply embroiled in what will become the Thirty Years’ War.

A young Philip Lord, once favoured at King James’ court, has vanished without a trace, under the shadow of treason.

Outside the besieged city of Breda, Captain Matthew Rider faces the brutal reality of wintering his cavalry in the siege lines, until he crosses paths with Filippo Schiavono, a young man whose courage and skill could change everything.

Kate, Lady Catherine de Bouqulement, arrives in London prepared to navigate the dangerous politics of King James’ court to ensure troops are sent to her mistress, the exiled Queen of Bohemia.

Within Breda’s walls, a foundling named Jorrit unwittingly stumbles into a lethal conspiracy when Schiavono hires him, supposedly to help sell smuggled tobacco. But Schiavono’s plans go awry and they are compelled to flee the city, only to be captured at sea.

If Schiavono is unable to prove his loyalty and ruthlessness to a savage Dunkirker privateer captain, both he and Jorrit will face certain death.

Meanwhile, in London, Kate is forced to fight her own battle against those seeking to coerce her into their schemes and finds herself trapped in a terrifying and deadly power struggle.

Driven by violence, treachery, and the sea’s merciless tides, their fates collide.

A Lodestar of the Golden Age

One of the reasons I love setting my books in the 17th century is that the art of the time was prolific and almost photographic. Each painting becomes a window into that lost past. The scenes of everyday life bring the period vividly to life in a way that previous eras never really were, as most paintings in earlier times were formal depictions of events, allegories, or portraits commissioned by the wealthy. One nation in particular led the way in this glorious artistic revolution: the Dutch Republic, where we speak of the flowering as a golden age.

Another feature of the Dutch at this time was their attitude to women. Visiting Englishmen commented on how strange it was to see women out drinking with their friends or stopping to talk to men much as equals. There were even two forms of marriage possible for women, the more traditional sort that gave all over to her husband and a kind that allowed her to keep her own wealth, manage her own property and run her own business.

So it is not so surprising to find women were also professional artists.

One such was Judith Leyster. Her surname means ‘lodestar’ or what we would call the Pole Star today and she signed her paintings JL and with a star.

Being born in 1609 would have meant she was the same age as Philip Lord who is the main character in my book The Fugitive’s Sword, and whilst he began his mercenary career in the pages of that book, she was training as an artist, most likely with Frans Pietersz de Grebber in Haarlem. From their similarity in style she also probably worked with Franz Hals.

Judith was clearly very talented even in her teens, and by the time she was twenty-four she had been accepted as a full member of Haarlem’s guild of artists. Her self-portrait is wonderfully informal and vibrant, looking out at the viewer as if in welcome, her ruff clearly in the way of her work but there to show her status. It might well have been the piece she painted to gain admission to the guild. Within two years she was running her own studio and had three apprentices training under her.

It is possible that she turned to art professionally after her family suffered bankruptcy, but it is hard to imagine anyone with her precocious talent not wanting to become an artist, especially in a time and place where that was such an exciting thing to be.

What I love about her work is that it is always full of warmth and life. There is almost always humour in it, indeed she frequently painted people laughing and clearly enjoying themselves. Not for Judith the stiff and formal. Her people move and invite you to join them. Most of her paintings also have a moral message in them as was expected in such artworks at the time, but it is usually worked into the overall composition in a subtle manner.

In her lifetime she was a successful artist, recognised by her fellow artists as a woman of great talent, and a professional colleague. Tragically, after she died, she fell victim to the misogyny of the era. She married in 1636 to one Jan Miense Molenaer who was also an artist, and they had shared a studio. Because of that, after her death many of her paintings were falsely ascribed to him and others came to be considered the work of Frans Hals. Indeed, Hals’ signature was painted over hers on at least one. Judith Leyster was all but forgotten.

Fortunately, in 1893 the Louvre acquired that supposed Hals painting which we now know as the Carousing Couple. Examining the painting, they discovered Hals’ signature was false and restored it to Judith. Since then, her work has gained in recognition and the Lodestar has taken her rightful place in the glittering galaxy of her Golden Age peers.

Heart of Evergreen!

Book Link

New Review From Literary Titan

Heart of Evergreen by Mary L. Schmidt is a psychological thriller that masterfully delves into the unraveling life of Kim Dailey. A devoted wife, Kim’s seemingly perfect marriage takes a chilling turn when she discovers her name linked to a hit list on her husband Steve’s laptop. This revelation propels her into a whirlwind of doubt and fear, where every moment becomes a high-stakes journey to uncover the truth. As Kim confronts the possibility that her husband may be a covert assassin, the narrative explores themes of deception, resilience, and the lengths one will go to protect their family.

One of the novel’s standout strengths is its seamless blend of suspense, mystery, and romance. Schmidt crafts a deeply personal and intimate story, grounding the tension with the raw, emotional depth of her protagonist. Kim’s love for Steve, even amidst her mounting suspicion, and her compassionate observations of him as a father figure to her children, create a poignant duality that resonates. A particularly haunting moment arises when Dmitry’s death is contemplated—a scene so viscerally portrayed that it lingers long after reading. Schmidt juxtaposes the brutal finality of loss with the tenderness of grief, making it both heartrending and unforgettable. The story’s backdrop is a festive celebration overshadowed by the threat of an unseen assassin that creates gripping tension, while the richly layered characters bring authenticity and nuance to the narrative. The novel’s exploration of human relationships is deeply resonant, capturing moments of heartbreak, love, and hope with equal finesse. A notable strength lies in its portrayal of women’s resilience. Whether navigating life-altering choices or enduring harrowing trials, the women in Heart of Evergreen shine as embodiments of strength and grace. Balancing its weighty emotional themes are heartwarming glimpses of Kim’s moments of joy, particularly with her children. These scenes lend a warmth that counterbalances the darker aspects of the plot, offering moments of reprieve amidst the tension. The crescendo of the narrative, the poignant demise of Dmitry stands out as a masterfully written moment, weaving hope and heartbreak into an unforgettable climax.

Heart of Evergreen is an evocative tale that will captivate readers who enjoy romantic family sagas infused with elements of crime, desire, and emotional complexity. Fans of Ian McEwan’s Atonement will be drawn to its layered storytelling and profound exploration of the human spirit. This is a novel that lingers in the mind, leaving readers both moved and reflective.

Meet JP MacDougall

Please welcome JP MacDougall to my blog. Hello James. James wrote the Pangean Chronicles series. Shall we chat about this series?

Please introduce yourself to those reading this blog post.

Hi, I’m James MacDougall from the UK and I am the author of the Pangean Chronicles series. Over the past twenty years I’ve written the Pangean Chronicles series which is made up of five books: A main trilogy and then two prequels.

Has writing always been part of your life and when did you “know” that it was time to start writing your first book?

I always loved creative writing as a child and it was always a strength of mine at school. It wasn’t until I was about 19 and I was going through a bad patch and went off the rails a little – the writing really kicked in then and it acted as a coping mechanism. To begin with I just wrote poetry (really badly!) but then this idea started to form and I just started writing what would later become Awakenings, which is the first of the Pangean Chronicles. For the past 20 years I have dipped in and out of the story, adding things, changing things and it became a hobby that never left. I don’t think I was aware that this was going to be my first book and I certainly never imagined that it would be published!

How difficult was it writing your first book?

I didn’t find it difficult – or maybe I did – it took twenty years for the main trilogy to be in any state where I was happy for other people to read them. I think I would have moments when I just ran out of ideas and so I’d park it and sit on it for a few years before coming back to it again. But really, the whole writing process is so pleasurable and rewarding and as I said it also helped with times when my mental health was not as good as it should have been.

Have you ever wanted to give up and what stopped you?

No, I’ve never wanted to give up writing. Even when I got to a point where the ideas weren’t flowing, I always knew that something would come to me eventually – I was never in a rush to get it finished.

Who is the most supportive of you and your dream to be a writer?

My wife is amazing and it was she who told me a few years ago that I should get my stories published. She is very patient as well – I tend to disappear off into my own little world and she handles that very well. My dad has also been an incredible supporter, he has read all my books and always gives me very honest feedback!

What is the best advice given to you (book or otherwise), and by whom?

Be patient! I am the most impatient and knee jerky person and the whole publishing game is designed for very patient people. I made some silly mistakes at the beginning of this whole thing purely down to my impulsiveness, but I think I have learnt some lessons and have accepted that things just don’t happen overnight!

What is your target audience and what aspect of your writing do you feel targets that audience?

My writing is quite fast paced and there is always something going on. I’ve always felt that it would appeal to tweens and teens but I know a number of older readers who have also very much enjoyed the stories.

Did the cover evolve the same way, or did you work with someone to make it come together for you?

For Awakenings I had a cover designer working with me to come up with the front cover and it was her idea to have a character on the front cover. I’m really pleased with the result people say it is quite an enticing front cover. I think I only began thinking about the front cover when I was close to publishing – it’s a bit corny but the writing has always been my priority.

What are you working on now? Can we get a peek, an excerpt?

Having now finished the Pangean Chronicles series, I am now working on an origins series. Throughout the five books, there are loads of references and back stories to my version of the time of Pangea and I thought it would be great to write that story. So, I’m beginning from the very beginning and am planning to chart the story of the Dark Lord’s first rise and the fall of Pangea into Darkness. I’m about three quarters of the way through the first one at the moment and hopefully will have that complete by March. There is a second part as well which I am scribbling away on my note pad!

Any last words before we wrap things up?

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say hello! If you are ever considering writing a book… Do it and do it for yourself above everything else. I am not sure where I would be without my writing, it certainly picked me up when I was in some very dark places.

BIO:

James started writing at the age of 19, just 3 years after his dyslexia diagnosis. Refusing to allow his dyslexia to define him, James always had a great imagination for stories and found an endless source of inspiration through the works of J.R. Tolkein, Ian Fleming and Stephen King. It has been a 20 year labour of love to combine these genres in his own series of books, ‘The Pangean Chronicles’, which were written while working as a full time teacher in the south east. As a devoted father to three young children, James also enjoys practicing the skill of oral storytelling, a skill he credits to helping him overcome the challenges of being a dyslexic author. When he is not writing, teaching or telling stories, James loves to be outdoors, promoting outdoor learning, working in his own garden or walking on the Ashdown Forest with his family.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an adventure!

I loved this book! Ellis used facts and her imagination in writing this novel for kids. Any child would be enamored in this tale that leaves, fats, truth, fiction, magic, and pure imagination in this mystery/adventure book for kids. Kudos to the author. The action is non-stop and takes the reader on an adventure across Paris as they chase after a thief and find his stash of stolen priceless art stolen from museums in Paris. The catacombs certainly can be scary, and landing in it under Paris after going through a portal is scary, but not too scary for kids. What an adventure, indeed!
