The Thanksgiving Child

Book Link

From Amazon:

When Sadie Carter wakes up on a cold Thanksgiving morning in 1880, she’s now an orphan. Her brother will go with Uncle Lambert because Frank can earn his keep, and her prettier sister will be taken by a woman in town. But no one seems to want Sadie. When Mary Mohler invites her home, Sadie is grateful to have somewhere to go. The Mohlers are nice, but she hopes Uncle Lambert will keep his half-promise that he might come back to get her. In the meantime, she has to adjust to a strange family and their different ways of dressing and doing things. But as the months go by, she’s torn between longing for the family she’s lost and the one she’s beginning to love. The Thanksgiving Child is a story that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. It’s inspired and partially derived from the life of the real Sadie Carter who was born in 1872. Sadie was close in age to Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote the Little House books based on her childhood. Laura’s life was shaped by a restless movement westward while Sadie lived until adulthood in Missouri. The Civil War appears to have had little impact upon Laura’s story and the opposite is true of Sadie. As the daughter of a Union soldier, she lived in Missouri, where supporters of both sides kept mixed feelings. Attitudes were also mixed toward the Dunkards, a group that included the Mohlers. They were similar to the Amish with plain clothes and strict ways. While this novel is written as fiction, it includes the facts and stories from Sadie Carter’s life.

My Review:

Life is hard for many people and the main character in this story lived a hard life that became a good life. Things were tough in the 1880s and post civil war pitted neighbor against neighbor due to the side one’s family fought for. Sadie is representative of many children during that time, of the ones who had their mother pass away and their dad sick with tuberculosis. A hateful stepmother didn’t help. Yet Sadie thrived, for real, as evidenced by the fact she grew in size for shoes and clothing. Living in one extreme of very little to eat to being in another where food was plentiful, especially when raised by a family who worked hard to preserve foods grown for the coming winter. Sadie realizes that being with a family unlike any she’d known, was the best thing for her.

Meet George Yuhasz

Please welcome George Yuhasz to my blog. Good morning, George. Shall we get started?

Please introduce yourself to those reading this blog post.

I’m George Yuhasz, author of the children’s book IMAGINE THAT: THE MAGIC OF THE MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS and most recently the thriller novel RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE. Both books have won numerous awards and have received great reviews. Very grateful. My thanks to you for taking time to read about my writing and me.

Has writing always been part of your life and when did you “know” that it was time to start writing your first book?

I did not begin writing until after I retired. My professional career and family were my main focus and did not afford time for writing.

How difficult was it writing your first book?

It was a challenge to write a children’s story. However, I was inspired by my granddaughter, who is the protagonist in the book, and was driven to create a special story for her as a gift.

Have you ever wanted to give up and what stopped you?

I never thought about giving up. Not an option.

Who is the most supportive of you and your dream to be a writer?

I never dreamed to be a writer. It’s a self-motivating thing with me; I prefer to live being a writer and it’s a great life. Being creative, working with ideas and random thoughts, putting all the pieces together-exciting! As an added bonus, you meet wonderful readers and creatives like Mary Schmidt (I couldn’t resist, Mary). Much support has come to me in all shapes, sizes, and colors and has been most welcome.

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Having the freedom to read and write what you desire is precious. Hold it dear, fight for it if you have to.

What is the best advice given to you (book or otherwise), and by whom?

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow-from his poem “The Builders.”

Nothing useless is or low

Each thing in its place is best

And what seems like idle show

Strengthens and supports the rest

What is your target audience and what aspect of your writing do you feel targets that audience?

My target audience are those readers who are looking for something beyond being entertained by a story.  Life lessons. A new approach to solving a problem. Increased awareness and appreciation of our natural world. These are just some of the things that are important to me and I hope will resonate with my readers as well.

Did the cover evolve the same way, or did you work with someone to make it come together for you?

I worked with wonderful artists/illustrators for both books who understood my goals for writing each story.

What are you working on now? Can we get a peek, an excerpt?

I am working on another children’s story and also a sequel to RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE. Both projects are in beginning stages at this time.

Any last words before we wrap things up?

Someone once asked me what I value as a writer. A heavy question. My response was in effect the following: I believe holding myself accountable in bringing my best efforts to creating meaningful, thought provoking and entertaining stories encouraging love, kindness, friendship, hope, and reverence for our natural world. My profound gratitude to all who continue to support and inspire me on this amazing journey.

The Sum Of Our Sorrows

Book Link

From Amazon:

In an idyllic suburb in Northern California, tragedy strikes the Sheppard family when Abby, the mother of three daughters and wife to Dalton, is killed in a car accident. Charlotte, the middle daughter, is in the car with her mother and survives without physical injury but remains deeply scarred on the inside.

Dalton tells Lily, his eldest daughter, that she must sacrifice long-awaited college plans and put her life on hold to take care of her sisters. Lily is torn between her devotion to family and an increasing need to find her place in the world — but how can she leave, knowing her family may crumble? Will her presence eventually cause more problems than it resolves?

The Sum of our Sorrows reveals how the aftermath of a family tragedy can precipitate sorrows never imagined. It is a tale of grief, hope, healing, coming-of-age, friendship, and survival. It is also a love story of two broken souls living through pain in search of better days and the renewal of one’s spirit.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: I write characters as I hear them speak to me. Some of these stories contain non-gratuitous expletives and sexual references. This book also contains some situations that may be triggering to some readers. If this is not to your liking, please don’t read this book. Thank you.

This book is profound, and the writing is superlative. We start with love and loss and how it affects loved ones still living. Let me say right now, everyone has their own vision of Loss and how they coped, healthy or not. The one constant in this story is family and family isn’t always blood. Family includes those you want in your life. The book is epic in length, but still an easy read. I do love how hope and love of family brings everyone together in a full circle. Alcohol is not the answer to huge loss, and making your daughter into a surrogate mother isn’t real. I have one trigger warning for those who could be affected and that is one scene of attempted rape, and one of rape. The monster who did this, the rape itself, are not a full read into the scene, but the character who was raped was verbal at the time, and in severe nightmares. The actual act is not in this book. So you may not be triggered. Overall, the psychology of each character is amazing to think about. I do love a good love story and this novel has several to say the least.

Meet Marco Marek

Please welcome Marco Marek to my blog today. Great to have you on. Shall we get started?

Please introduce yourself to those reading this blog post.

Hello there, I’m Marco Marek, I’m a writer from Italy and I write most in English because the market is more wide and I don’t want to be restricted to just one country.

Has writing always been part of your life and when did you “know” that it was time to start writing your first book?

Well, I started in 2010, I always liked fantasy movies and books, like the Lord of Rings, Jules Verne, Harry Potter etc. I thought one day why I can write my own fantasy story? Then I wrote my first book Hyperearth.

How difficult was it writing your first book?

I think for me it was never been difficult writing, I have a story in mind then I develop it while I’m writing, I plan the plot sometimes so  it more easy to write.

Have you ever wanted to give up and what stopped you?

I don’t know, I think I never thought to give up, most the promotion and asking for a review it is stressful since you find lot of people lazy and take ages until they write a review, and sometimes they don’t leave it at all.

Who is the most supportive of you and your dream to be a writer?

Family and some relatives, friends, the dream is to see your book on cinema screen!

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

To read without prejudice, some readers would like your book must be a masterpiece, and written like they want. Instead a reader should read and appreciate every story a writer has to say, then can express their thought.

What is the best advice given to you (book or otherwise), and by whom?

Read read read a lot  and learn then you can write… I think it was Stephen King

What is your target audience and what aspect of your writing do you feel targets that audience?

Young adult, hoping they enjoy the adventures that are on my books

Did the cover evolve the same way, or did you work with someone to make it come together for you?

First two books I created my self the cover, for the trilogy I hired a professional artist, that she created the cover like I wanted.

What are you working on now? Can we get a peek, an excerpt?

I ended a book just some months ago, It is a story of a woman, former singer star in decadence and a bit depressed who has won an holiday in Mexico, then she will  meet a man who had some issues than her plus amnesia, then they will be involved in various adventures…

Any last words before we wrap things up?

Hope to get more Fantasy readers, they are important for us indie authors, with they help we can grow more, so please leave a review, that’s our best reward.

Meet Anthony DiAngelo

Welcome to my blog. Good morning. Shall we get started?

Please introduce yourself to those reading this blog post.

Hello everyone, my name is Anthony DiAngelo, and I am an aspiring author from a small town in British Columbia, Canada. My hope, and goal, is to make writing my full-time career as I continue to pursue representation from a literary agent.

Has writing always been part of your life and when did you “know” that it was time to start writing your first book?

I have always had a love of storytelling and creating characters since early childhood. I had never taken it seriously as I doubted my own skill and believed I wasn’t good enough. For an assignment given to me by one of my teachers, I had to write an essay discussing an event that changed my life. I wrote, for my subject, about my near-death experience when I nearly perished from an illness that forever changed my life. The resulting material brought my teacher to tears and she suggested I consider writing as a vocation. It wasn’t until over a decade later that I had the inclination to write my first novel. I “knew” it was time to write my first book after an incredibly detailed dream that wouldn’t leave me alone until I wrote down the notes.

How difficult was it writing your first book?

Actually, writing the book wasn’t difficult for me, it was editing. When I started work on the first book, I wasn’t aware of the structure of a novel and basically just poured my thoughts out onto the page. There was a rudimentary plotline, but it was a long, continuous storyline. I read about creating a structure and a formula for driving the plot. As a result, I chopped the book nearly in half through the editing process and saved the cut material stored away for a potential sequel.

Have you ever wanted to give up and what stopped you?

I, like so many creatives out there, suffer from self-doubt. I have had many moments where I have felt as though I am fooling myself and that my work isn’t good enough. The rejection from agents and criticism from critics make it difficult at times to keep going. Marketing and getting my work out to the world is my greatest challenge and having been scammed by the predators on social media has also made me skeptical. The love for the craft of storytelling is what stopped me and continues to keep me forging ahead.

Who is the most supportive of you and your dream to be a writer?

My mother and my girlfriend. Both are the first to read my work and are not afraid to hit me with the negative feedback when it arises. Their belief in my talent helps me pick myself up when I fall and keep moving.

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Simply I hope you enjoy my work. My goal is to entertain and take your mind off the stresses of everyday life if only for a short while.

What is the best advice given to you (book or otherwise), and by whom?

I don’t recall where the quote originates but I often repeat to myself: “You are the only person who can tell your story.”

What is your target audience and what aspect of your writing do you feel targets that audience?

This one is difficult to answer as my available titles are each written in a different genre and therefore have a different audience. I would say the aspect of my writing would be how I develop the atmosphere of each scene. I am a visual writer and what the reader to experience the scene as if they’re right next to the character.

Did the cover evolve the same way, or did you work with someone to make it come together for you?

I designed my covers myself and were what I imagined as I built the plot for each book. It was essential to me that the covers act as a teaser to what will be read within the pages that follow.

What are you working on now? Can we get a peek, an excerpt?

I am working on a fantasy series that could potentially be up to six books. Unfortunately, I do not have an excerpt at this time, but I describe it as Game of Thrones meets Star Wars.

Any last words before we wrap things up?

Not really, I would simply like to thank you for the opportunity to promote my work and also thank those who have taken the time to read my work.

Book Excellence Award

You know that hush that falls when someone tells you something sacred? That’s what reading Shadow feels like.

It’s not loud or flashy. It doesn’t shout for your attention. Instead, it kneels down beside you—yes, you—and gently says, “This matters. Let’s talk about it.”

On the surface, it’s a story about a pet dog named Shadow who has passed away. But if that’s all you see, read it again. Shadow isn’t just about death—it’s about the moment children meet grief for the very first time, face-to-face, with no script and no armour.

What struck me most was the honesty. Schmidt doesn’t tiptoe around sadness. She doesn’t try to cover it in glitter or distractions. She simply invites children to feel what they feel—fully, freely, and without shame.

And then—oh, then—she offers comfort. The kind of comfort that isn’t a quick fix but a gentle holding of hands. Talking, drawing, planting flowers… small acts with big meanings. They don’t erase the hurt, but they honour it. And that’s where healing begins.

Illustrated with tenderness and accompanied by thoughtful parental guidance at the back, Shadow is as much a resource as it is a story. But more than anything, it’s a companion. A quiet friend for the quietest moments.

This is the kind of book you don’t just shelve. You keep it within reach—because you’ll want to share it when words fail and hearts ache.

Shadow is soft-spoken, but it will stay with you long after the last page—like pawprints in your memory and petals from a flower planted in love.

Review:

Grief is a curious thing. It sneaks up in the form of a missing paw print, an empty corner where a bed used to be, or the silence where a bark once echoed. Shadow by Mary and Michael Schmidt is not just a children’s book—it is a gentle, necessary guide through the uncharted territory of loss.

Children often experience death for the first time through the loss of a beloved pet. But how do they process it? What words can comfort them when their furry companion is no longer there? Schmidt’s book does something many avoid: it acknowledges grief, normalizes it, and offers a way forward.

The First Goodbye

History shows us that humans have mourned pets for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians mummified their cats; Romans etched epitaphs for their dogs. The pain of losing a pet is not new, yet we often struggle to help children navigate it. Shadow provides a roadmap, teaching kids that grief is real, valid, and—most importantly—manageable.

Take six-year-old Emily, for instance. She loses her golden retriever, Max, and doesn’t understand why he isn’t coming back. Her parents fumble for words. “He’s in a better place” feels hollow. But then they read Shadow together. They draw pictures of Max, plant a tree in his memory, and talk about their favorite moments. Grief doesn’t vanish, but it transforms into something gentler.

A Story That Heals

The book’s approach is both practical and profound. It suggests creative ways to process loss—drawing, storytelling, and planting flowers—while offering much-needed validation: “It’s okay to feel sad. It’s okay to cry.” Unlike many children’s books that gloss over hard topics, Shadow embraces them.

This is no accident. Studies show that children who learn about grief early are better equipped to handle future losses. A 2018 study by the Journal of Child Psychology found that children who openly discuss emotions form stronger coping mechanisms later in life. This book doesn’t just tell a story; it builds resilience.

Why Every Family Needs Shadow

Renowned psychologist Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross once wrote, “The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss… You will learn to live with it.” Shadow distills this truth in a way that young minds can grasp.

More than just a book, Shadow is an emotional toolkit. It reassures children that they are not alone. It reminds parents that silence isn’t always golden. And it teaches us all that love never really leaves—it just changes form.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every child had a guide like this for life’s first heartbreak?

  • I found this story to be a unique paranormal read with a loving couple who became engaged. Did they marry? I leave that for the next readers. The Hope Diamond is front and center throughout this book in many different ways. Ethereal ghosts are almost in every home and abode. Mostly kind, some a bit bitter, and other men who try to kill the main male protagonist. A lot happens in the span of a 2- 3 hour drive. That final clue needed by those who wished to claim it, whether entitled to claim it or not. Danger lurks everywhere, even on the high seas. This book is descriptive, some even repetitions of phrases. I would have preferred more dialogue in bringing the story to life, but that is my preference
