Lies told by Small Presses

Steven Capps's avatarBard & Books

Like many of my posts, this stems from something I saw in an online writer’s group. Essentially, someone who has been traditionally published from a small press was putting down people who self-publish. Personally, I have my own problems with self-publishing that I discuss in my “Why I’ll Never Self-Publish” post, but that is besides the point. At this point, I’d like to formally begin my rant against small presses.

In my opinion, traditional publishing is best done through an agent and then with a professionally recognized publisher. Small presses, unless they are recongized by writing organizations like Codex or SFWA, often give little more than what someone can do through self-publishing but will suck away 40-60% of the author’s share of royalties and then use self-publishing tools (like Createspace) to produce the book. Small Presses get away with this by telling authors lies in order to get them to sign…

WordPress: Yell Into the Echoing Void

Darth Vader

First of all, I do how one beef with a WordPress change.  Where in the world is the Underline toggle?  I see Italics and Bold.  No sign of underlining, which is a fairly common practice.  I have to use Ctrl-U every time, which seems to go against the idea of making things easier and more user-friendly.

On to the real topic, which is . . . How is everyone doing out in Blog Land?

I ask because my traffic has been pretty bad.  Likes seem to flow in pretty easily, but not much in the way of comments.  I was thinking it was just me since I haven’t been reliable in my book releases, I’m running out of interesting topics, and I’m still having bouts with depression.  Yet, I do see people wondering the same thing, so maybe it’s an across the board issue.  Wordpress might be losing…

Author Media Kits, Part 2—The News Release

Staci Troilo's avatarStory Empire

Ciao, SEers. As promised, I’m continuing my exploration of the author media kit. (If you missed that post or want a refresher before continuing, click here.)

Today, we’re going to talk about the news release. (Press Release is an outdated term referring to the press that prints newspapers. That technology has modernized and we submit our release to more than just newspapers these days, so the name has been changed to News Release to reflect those changes.)

Authors can certainly submit their own news releases to the media, but I’ve found some elitist organizations still don’t accept indie authors as credible and talented artists, and therefore disregard announcements from them. Because of this bias, if at all possible, have your publisher or a professional organization submit the release on your behalf. However, if you have a kick-butt release and media kit, or if you find progressive organizations…

The power of words…

foreverbloggergirl's avatarForeverbloggergirl

Image result for girls hugging tumblrheyy everyone,

Soo … everyone has heard the expression “actions speak louder than words” and in some situations this is definitely the case … but in others, not so much. Words have the power to make it or break it. A simple phrase like:

I love you  …. or…..

…… I hate you

could change your interpretation of life, or even your relationship (“will you marry me?” for example).

Image result for the power of words quotesIt’s gets tiring for people around you to constantly say “think before you speak”, but it’s not just that, it’s the effect those words (or lack of them in some cases) can cause a catastrophic effect on the other person.

Words are more powerful than anything, when you take the time to stand face to face with someone and give just a little bit of advice or a push in the right direction, it can mean a lot more than a text.

Words have…

My 4 Rules for Writing a Book Series

Great information in this piece. We do the same with our children’s book series.

by Chloe-Anne Ross

So I’m about to start writing a trilogy, something I’ve never done before. I’ve got everything I need for a good story: characters I want to follow and a story I want to follow through with. I’m thrilled to be writing it and also scared as all hell.

It is lucky for anyone who is, has or wants to do the same thing that there is a multitude of series out there. It is by reading them that I’ve discovered what to avoid and what I have to remember when getting those words down. So here they are!
