Please welcome Marilyn Glover to my blog. Good morning, Marilyn. Make yourself cozy and we will get started.
Please introduce yourself to those reading this blog post.
My name is Marilyn Glover. I am an online content creator and editor who writes on Medium and Vocal Media.
Has writing always been part of your life and when did you “know” that it was time to start writing your first book?
When I was a child, I enjoyed writing short stories and poems, but it was during the 2020 Pandemic that I rekindled my love for the written word.
I had major surgery just weeks before COVID hit our nation. Having my spleen removed to resolve a rare benign tumor condition instantly made me an immunocompromised individual. With all the COVID unknowns, I was forced into isolation for nearly two years, displacing me from my hospitality career. It’s during this time that I rediscovered writing while doing a Google search. I came across Vocal Media, began writing on the platform, and reunited with the creator in me. Poetry and Spirituality became my top niches, but I knew right away I wanted to write a book.
How difficult was it writing your first book?
The artistic process of writing my poems came naturally, but the nerves associated with the “follow-through,” the actual publishing process, were a struggle. I worried about what potential readers might think, if there would be any readers at all.
Have you ever wanted to give up and what stopped you?
I can’t say that I ever wanted to give up, but the fear of scrutiny played repeatedly in my head. My dedication to my art kept me aboard despite all my worries.
Who is the most supportive of you and your dream to be a writer?
I would say that my youngest daughter has been the most supportive of my dream. In my family, for the most part, art-related fields are considered hobbies rather than potential careers, and pursuing them as such is nothing more than a pie-in-the-sky dream.
Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
Never live a life led by fear. I was trapped in the cycle for a long time until I was willing to dive into my inner world and face my fears head-on.
What is the best advice given to you (book or otherwise), and by whom?
About eight years ago, a pastor, whom I’d never met before, told me I had many spiritual gifts and a lot to say. He even asked me when I was going to write my book. At the time, I hadn’t reconnected with the art of the written word, so I was taken aback. Our conversation remained with me, especially one specific sentence: “You walk with an army of angels.”
What is your target audience and what aspect of your writing do you feel targets that audience?
My target audience is those seeking shadow work and, of course, poetry lovers. Often, I incorporate personal experience into my poetry, and I feel it resonates with readers.
Did the cover evolve the same way, or did you work with someone to make it come together for you?
My cover was created with Canva, utilizing Jungian-themed colors and the Ouroboros. The Ouroboros (snake devouring its own tail) is a classic symbol of individuation, our lifelong process of “wholeness” discovery. The snake is a powerful symbol, appearing often in my dreams, and the drop of blood I added to the image represents the blood, sweat, and tears one puts into their own life. Sometimes it’s pleasant, sometimes it’s painful, but no matter what, it’s always beautiful.
What are you working on now? Can we get a peek, an excerpt?
Currently, I am writing the full-length book, Archetype of the Unlived, which includes the 15 poems from Shadow’s Reprieve and expands on the three parts: Persona, Shadow & Self.
Any last words before we wrap things up?
I would like to thank you for this opportunity and let others know that no matter how difficult life may be, there is always another perspective to consider. Often, this perspective lies within, but one must quiet the noisy world and lean into the inner voice. I write about these moments, hoping to bring a bit of peace to a soul in need.
